What is Veterinary Acupuncture?

Have you got a pet who is struggling with chronic pain or another chronic illness that conventional veterinary treatment isn’t managing?

Maybe your animal can’t tolerate regular medications due to side effects or other conditions?

By stimulating receptors under the skin, and nerve endings within connective tissues and muscles, acupuncture needles produce blood vessel dilation, release of endorphins and affect nerve signal conduction both local to the needle and within the spinal cord and brain.

Due to its effects on endorphin release, improvement in blood flow and alteration of pain signalling pathways within nerves both local to the needles and within the brain and spinal cord, acupuncture is an excellent treatment choice for conditions which result in chronic pain or nerve dysfunction.  This includes:

  • Osteoarthritis, hip & elbow dysplasia

  • Post-operative pain of other muscular or ligament injuries

  • Spinal cord disease such as intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), lumbosacral disease or degenerative myelopathies

  • Nerve injury due to trauma such as road accidents, which can lead to muscle atrophy or decreased bladder function

  • Chronic intestinal or bladder diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC)

Benefits include:

Acupuncture releases endorphins (the body’s own morphine-like chemicals) and stimulates blood flow to constricted areas to relieve pain and promote healing.

It can relieve tension and constriction in the myofascial system (muscles and connective tissues). These often become painful secondarily to the initial disease, as the animal tries to compensate for or protect the damaged area - sometimes these actually become the primary source of pain for the animal.

Acupuncture can influence the emotional centres of the brain and autonomic nervous system to bring a painful animal out of their ‘flight or flight’ state into a calmer state of mind, reducing muscular tension and anxiety to improve wellbeing

It is extremely safe in trained hands; it can be tolerated by all pets no matter what medical conditions they have or what medications they are already on
